2016. The once-coveted trophy passed down through the generations to Bristol’s most esteemed professional and amateur footballers mysteriously disappeared for over 40 years. The Harry Bamford Memorial Trophy takes its name in honour of the former Bristol Rovers full-back who was sadly killed in a motorcycle accident in 1958 aged 38. After his death, the trophy was created in tribute to the Gas icon and was awarded to Bristol’s most respected footballer every year until its disappearance in 1973. It resurfaced in 2014, having been found in a dusty box full of trophies at the Memorial Stadium and has since been restored, polished and back to its former glory thanks to the efforts of football enthusiast Steve Sutor. The awards date back to 1959 and Steve, from Kingswood, has worked tirelessly over the past two years to ensure Bristol’s prized footballers receive the acclaim they deserve that they missed out on over the 40-year spell. “40 sportsmen were awarded the trophy who, had it still been going, would have won it,” he said. “I decided to give 13 nominations to Rovers, 13 to City and the other 14 to local club players.” Since the resurrection, the likes of Gary Mabbutt, Alan Warboys and Bruce Bannister have received awards from the Pirates, while the Robins have included Scott Murray and Louis Carey among others on their honours list. Elsewhere, Chipping Sodbury’s Mike Fox and Longwell Green’s John Gibbs head the list of local club recipients. “I’m just hoping, through the work everyone has put in, that we can keep the trophy going as it’s a very popular prize that a lot of people have fond memories of,” Sutor, 65, added. “It’s also a great testament to Harry Bamford, who was a legend at Bristol Rovers.” A Junior Harry Bamford Memorial Trophy will also be awarded to a player aged between 17 and 19.
